I've tried a variety of entry level markers with my recent forray into the world of Paintball(namely woodsball). I've played with a Styker, a Brass Eagle, a Tac5, a Tippman98Custom & a Tippman Alpha Black before I purchased the Spyder MR-1.

The Spyder MR-1 pack shown here was one heck of a good deal. You get a good starter mask with a wide field of view and AV lens. A 12oz CO2 tank and a stock for the Spyder MR-1 paintball marker. Plus the included Allen Wrenches, Spare O-ring kit(for the ones likely to wear the quickest) and a few extra screws. The only thing you need to do is assemble the stock(1 screw), get your tank filled and buy some paintballs. It is ready to go.
The markers receiver, trigger, barrel, handgrip assembly, trigger guard and drop forward are all made of metal. The rubber grip covers are grippy and comfortable. The stock is made of a high impact resistant plastic that is both strurdy and durable. I've dumped this gun noze forward into the dirt on a few occasions as I dove for cover...and it required nothing for than for me to clean the dirt and devris out of the barrel...
My only (personal)complaint about (the stock) it is that it is a little shorter than I'd like. And when are wearing the mask it is hard to line up the sights. But this minor, and really, there is no perfect sighting for shooting paintballs. Bit this marker is really accurate in the 30-150ft range.

The tank drop-forward is sturdy, seals the tank well and has a bleed off hole when you go to remove the tank while it is pressurized.

The barrel is ported at the front end which helps the co2 blowoff. The detent (little rubber nib that holds the ball in place in the barrel) works exceptionally well. I've had 0 - zero ball chop. I've been playing with it since September. And have used a variety of low-cost balls (Impact, Zap, Conquest & Monster).
This marker, when fired, is not quiet but it has the typically solid Spyder feel when you pull the double trigger. And a satisfying metal report as the bolt releases and recocks.
At the stock velocity setting the balls fly far and hit hard. I've only ever adjusted it a 1/2 a turn on colder days when the air is thin.
There are a variety of upgrades to customize this marker as well. E-Trigger, Handled rail mounts, delrin bolts, scopes, alternative stocks, barrels and other accoutrements to make this as unique and as individual a marker as you desire or money can afford.
My personal recommendations would be an extended barrel (in the 14-16" range), an alternative stock, and a 20oz co2 tank.
